At a recent meeting of Rooter Man Technicians and Plumbers, Fitz explained the common problems on why storm drains clog and get stopped up. Mud and leaves, to no one’s surprise, were the main culprits. During rains, heavy or not, mud, grass and leaves are running into storm drains and clog them up. It takes special tools to properly remove mud and leaves. The other main culprit is tree roots that find their way into the drain line and eventually choke it off. Rooter Man has several heavy duty cabled root cutters to send in the drain to cut roots loose and remove them. There are also special solutions that a professional can put in your storm drain to retard the growth of roots. Call and ask us about Rootx.

One last cause of storm drain clogging that was mentioned was roof dust. Think of the square footage of your home’s roof. Think of how much dirt and dust land on it daily and then get washed off and down the drain during a rain. It can be massive. Thousands of dollars a year are spent by home owners that try to do the repairs with inadequate equipment and lack of expertise; only to call professional like Rooter Man after all.

So when the situation arises, Rooter Man is ready to unclog anything you have. Just give us a call at 504-262-8222

At a recent meeting of Rooter Man Technicians and Plumbers it was agreed upon that the following five things caused 95% of toilet clog problems…do any of them sound familiar to you?

1. Toys: Kids toys don’t go down toilets well, agreed?

2. Baby Wipes: Baby wipes are a bit more durable than toilet paper, so when they are flushed down a toilet consistently, there will be a clog.

3. Toilet paper: Sounds ironic, right? Toilet paper, in moderation, doesn’t clog toilets….toilet paper in huge amounts clogs toilets, nuff said.

4. Last: Feminine products: They may say on the directions that they’re flushable, but we know better. We unclog toilets from feminine products every day

5. The little wire hangers that hold toilet deodorizers. We find these all the time.

So when the situation arises, Rooter Man is ready to unclog your toilet or drain. Just give us a call at 504-262-8222.

A typical clog that can happen in your air conditioning system is the condensation line. Often condensation lines in central air conditioners get clogged with algae and dust. Routinely your air conditioning service person can unclog this line with line cleaning solutions or high pressure forced air. 9 out of 10 times that does the trick, but occasionally the condensation line feeds into a drain line that is clogged further down where an A/C technician is unfamiliar and doesn’t have the expertise and right tools to unclog. At that point they will recommend that you call us.

When this happens, don’t think the A/C guy is passing the buck. He just knows that we know pipes and he knows A/Cs.

Ask your technician or call 504-262-8222 to find out about drain clog preventative maintenance programs and solutions we have at Rooter Man.

In a recent meeting at Rooter Man with all the Drain Technicians and Plumbers, the unanimous answer was: EGG SHELLS! But, soon after egg shells other things came up: Rice, Spaghetti, Celery (fibrous vegetables), potato and carrot peels. These are the innocent things that can clog garbage disposals if not put down the drain in moderation.

Real garbage disposal cloggers in our seafood rich area that wouldn’t surprise you are: Shrimp peels, crawfish, fish bones and chicken bones. These items should never go in your garbage disposal. When using your garbage disposal, a simple rule of thumb is for every solid you send down the garbage disposal, you must use 10 times the water with it to wash it down the drain to help prevent a clog.

Another suggestion that sounds strange but can keep your disposal running in tip top shape is to put ice cubes down it once a month. Ice cubes will sharpen the blades and actually help clean the disposal on the way down.

Lastly, its best to always use cold water in a garbage disposal.

Please call our office at 504-262-8222 for more information or to have your garbage disposal unclogged today.

I received the following newsletter in August from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. It is so important for homeowners to understand why they should use licensed contractors, plumbers, electricians etc. This new law will assist you as a homeowner to change contractors if you feel you are not receiving the services you agreed upon. Please take a minute to read this bulletin.

Christine Keen Rooter Man

Governor Bobby Jindal Orders Homeowner Protections
Under the Hazard Mitigation Program

On August 19, 2011, Governor Bobby Jindal released Executive Order
BJ 11-18 covering homeowner protections under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

The Executive Order directs the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) to conduct investigations and proceedings necessary to suspend or revoke licenses or issue cease and desist orders against any contractor or sub-contractor performing work funded by the Hazard Mitigation Program if they fail to demonstrate an ability to adequately meet all State expectations for participation in the Hazard Mitigation Program; fail to meet generally accepted standards of construction or expectations of the particular area of licensing expertise; violate any federal, state, or local building codes or ordinances; or ceases to possess the necessary qualifications of responsibility, skill, experience and integrity expected of a contractor or subcontractor engaged in work funded by the Hazard Mitigation Program.

Additionally, the Executive Order directs the Commissioner of Administration to:

Implement a process that will empower homeowners to change contractors and complete their elevation projects in a timely and proper manner

Inspect or investigate any residence involved in a complaint of deficient construction

Suspend payments to contractors under any existing contract, and/or suspend contractors from entering into future contracts funded by the Hazard Mitigation Program if there was deficient construction and corrective action is not conducted in a timely manner

Increase insurance requirements on contractors participating in the Hazard Mitigation Program to ensure that contractors and subcontractors are sufficiently insured

Notify the Contractor’s Licensing Board of any finding that may be cause for suspension or revocation of a contractor
or sub-contractor’s license by the Board and file complaints with the Board to institute such proceedings

Ensure transparency in the program through publicly posting on the Internet and other publicly accessible places a list of contractors and/or sub-contractors who have been suspended or barred from participation in the Hazard Mitigation Program

Educate homeowners, contractors, and sub-contractors on the Hazard Mitigation Program

The LSLBC is working diligently to ensure that the measures outlined by the Governor through this Executive Order are enforced.

Properly licensed and qualified contractors…It’s the Law!

At Rooter Man we get all kinds of questions. So we’ll let our experienced technician, Cap, answer this one.

Cap: The biggest source of a clog from a washing machine is lint. Yes, lint. We see the lint that gets trapped in the dryer lint catcher, but there is no lint catcher in washing machines. So imagine the amount of lint that gets sent out of your washing machine. Although the drain is usually pretty big in diameter the lint catches itself in the drain pipe along with detergent, soap, dirt, coins, oil and grease. It’s a clogging mixture that’s bound to cause problems over the years.

If you are having trouble with a clogged washer line, give Rooter Man a call. We have the right people for the job, and we can come out today. Call 504-262-8222.

This isn’t exactly pretty but it is a simple answer. A common ingredient in soap is oil. Also, our bodies produce skin oil. When soap, water, hair, dirt and body oil go down a drain, over time they cling to the sides of your drain pipes. Once the build-up closes, you have a clog.

Trying to unclog with over-the-counter drain cleaners doesn’t work at that point because there is no flow for the cleaner to degrade the clog.

So the moral to the story is to periodically use Super Citrus BEFORE you get a clog….otherwise, you’ll need professionals, with professional tools, like Rooter Man

If you are having trouble with your drains, give Rooter Man a call. We have the right people for the job, and we can come out today. Call 504-262-8222
